On Friday 30th January, the UK TAVI Trial held its first Investigators Meeting at 11 Cavendish Square, London.

The final programme is available here and if you would like a copy of any of the available slides presented please get in touch with the UK TAVI office (uktavi@nds.ox.ac.uk).

Dr Henning Rud Andersen, the inventor of TAVI gave a particularly notable key note speech, during which he outlined how he had come to have the idea of the TAVI valve, and how it all progressed, from idea to delivery.

There was also a particularly interesting and beneficial break out session for the trial nurses during lunchtime, where all the nurses shared their experiences of the trial and discussed the hurdles that they had faced and how they overcame them. Some of the sites had different problems to others, but all were willing to share their own methods of dealing with barriers to recruitment at their site.

One of the most successful sessions was the recruitment session, chaired by Dr Bernard Prendergast, from the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, currently the most successful recruiting centre. This session involved nurses, cardiologists and surgeons from the top recruiting centres answering questions from the audience on how they overcame recruitment issues. Dr Prendergast also presented some ‘top tips’ from Oxford which were kindly put together by Karen Hinchcliffe, the research nurse from Oxford.

The day was a huge success and we would like to thank everybody that attended, in particular everyone who presented. We would also like to thank Millbrook Medical Conferences for their hard work in organising the event.
